The Merck drug known as Propecia (also known as finasteride) for hair loss, when it appears to have the side effect of causing erectile dysfunction and loss of libido in men. Perhaps more importantly, this 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors are a drug which can also cause or increase the risk of severe prostate cancer. Using the Gleason scale, prostate cancers scoring a 6 or less were reduced by the drug but those prostate cancers scoring an 8 or above were actually accelerated or made worse by using the drug.
